Finishing and French polishing
Restoration of the instrument’s surfaces with a finish chosen to suit its age, materials and character.
The finish protects the wood and strongly influences the visual character of the instrument. Before work begins we assess the surviving surface, the underlying materials and the style of the piano so that the chosen method becomes part of a considered restoration rather than a generic cosmetic refresh.
The work may include preparing and levelling surfaces, local repairs, recreating an appropriate finish and final polishing. Where suitable for the particular instrument, traditional French polishing may also be used. The goal is a durable, refined result consistent with the age and form of the upright or grand piano.
